As a junior flood safety, your work will explore interesting and complex flood safety issues related to levees and flood defenses. Here’s what you can expect as a junior flood safety consultant and researcher

In the Netherlands, we can live without levees and flood defenses. As a junior employee, you will help advise clients on the construction and management of these essential components of our water infrastructure. You will investigate how we can make them safe and keep them that way.

You will identify and analyze developments that affect the soil conditions and flood defences. You will assess the effects of climate change, land research subsidence, monitor flood situations and contribute to solutions for flood defense issues. In addition, you will be involved in the design, assessment and review of levees.

The new knowledge is validated in our experimental facilities, other places, and incorporated into software instruments. These are used by you and the sector. Sharing this knowledge fosters strong links with our partners and clients, both nationally and internationally.

Your main responsibilities will be:

1. Consultancy in the field of geotechnical engineering and risk assessment in studies for flood defences and levees.
2. Carrying out and reviewing assessments and dyke reinforcement projects.
3. Developing and validating knowledge related to flood defences, covering both failure mechanisms and the application of new techniques, such as for revetment or levee reinforcement.
4. You will contribute ideas and input to proposals and recommendations and will be known to help new knowledge. You will also visit clients to discuss projects with them. Clients are mainly Rijkswaterstaat, water authorities, contractors and consultants.
5. Working in multidisciplinary teams with colleagues from various technical disciplines on flood defence studies.

What we expect from you as a junior flood safety researcher consultant:

We are looking for a junior employee who is familiar with the Dutch soil conditions and flood safety issues. Furthermore we ask:

1. You are about to obtain or hold a Master’s degree (MSc) in civil engineering or earth sciences;
2. You have a demonstrable interest in or knowledge of soil mechanics and foundation engineering. An internship or work experience in this field is an advantage;
3. You have knowledge of computational techniques for levee modelling, experience with data analysis and are proficient in Python or another programming language;
4. You have a proactive and collaborative attitude.

What we offer

1. Deltares offers a one-year contract (minimum 32 hours) with the intention of a contract for an indefinite period of time. Our starting salary for MSc graduates is €3,968.38 gross per month based on a 40-hour week. If you already have a few years’ work experience, we will agree on an appropriate salary scale in consultation with you.
2. An 8% holiday holiday and 34 days’ holiday based on a 40-hour week.
